CHAT WITH ARTIST ARTHUR LANG

WEIRDNESS IS INSPIRING

In Downtown in Los Angeles we met the artist Arthur Lang on the rooftop terrace of his apartment. He is director, editor and photographer. 7 years ago he came from France to L.A. to produce music videos and today, among many other things, he is doing exactly this in the city of his choice.

“It’s difficult to get into the business and it is all about connections,” he said, and this he has maintained from the beginning. After graduation his career started across many jobs as assistance and light hand at photo shootings of celebrities. In his eyes, this was the key to further contacts. Now he is an integral part of this networked scene and adjusts in his appearance perfectly. Today he is photographing the Stars himself, is working for various reputable clients such as Universal Music, Walt Disney, Diesel, Joker Brand or UNICEF or works with artists such as Snoop Dog, Brooke Shields and Paris Hilton.

When we asked, what inspires him, he replied forthright: „I get inspired by things i love.“ We believe him on the spot. His surroundings and especially Downtown inspires him anew every day. All the different and sometimes weird characters that you can meet there every day, is one of his source of new inspiration. “Weirdness is inspiring because it lets you reflect and think different”. Every week he booked at least one model for a shoot, preferably outdoors somewhere in the city. Not for a customer or job but for himself and his work to discover new approaches. Important to him is that it is spontaneous and without planning to remain to be in “movement” and to take the chance that something new comes up. Another great source of inspiration for him are films – films of any kind. He tries to watch every day at least one. A hobby that we can quite understand.

As in several other interviews, we talked about collaboration. Arthur trust in collaboration and strongly believe that more brains are always better than a single one. When we asked him what does creativity mean to him, he said with full conviction, that art for him never has only one truth. You can see this point of view in his interesting and multifaceted work.
What a great encounter and we really like his open and honest character and that he goes his way with so much passion, purposefulness and still with serenity. An artist who knows how it goes and, even for large productions, like to take the reins – a doer who likes to be in the midst.
Thank you, Arthur!
